Please join us for a wonderful evening with local jazz singer Alva Anderson, who will perform an outdoor concert for IAH members and friends!
Alva Anderson is well known in Charleston music circles, performing in multiple popular venues and Jazz series downtown. Alva’s parents fostered in her a great appreciation for the arts. At 10, she started piano lessons, but later switched to the viola in order to participate in the music program in her high school in the Bronx. It was only later, when on tour in Europe, as a violist with a chamber music ensemble, that a friend invited her up to the mic during a late night jam session in a jazz club in Switzerland. She received a thrilling response from the audience, and that changed the focus and trajectory of her music career. Once back in New York, she participated in multiple vocal and instrumental workshops and over decades, shared her love for music with her students in the NYC public schools. Many of her students are now professional musicians and music teachers, inspired by her talent and dedication as a teacher.
In Charleston, Alva Anderson performs regularly at the Forte Jazz Lounge on King Street, and with our I’On neighbor Susan Conant’s Brazilian music ensemble Porto Seguro.
