Please join us for a walking tour of the iron gates in historic downtown Charleston designed and created by the legendary blacksmith, Philip Simmons. The tour will be led by Charleston guide (and development director of the American College of the Building Arts) Leigh Handall along with iron work professors and/or students from the college.
The tour will meet at the college at 649 Meeting Street (we will work on ride-sharing once we know who's going) and go downtown in Leigh's van. Once the walking tour is complete, Leigh will take us back to the college and our cars. We can then head up Meeting Street for lunch at Goat, Sheep, Cow at 804 Meeting Street.
Philip Simmons (June 9, 1912 – June 22, 2009) was an American artisan and blacksmith specializing in the craft of ironwork. Simmons spent 78 years as a blacksmith, focusing on decorative iron work. When he began his career, blacksmiths in Charleston made practical, everyday household objects, such as horseshoes. By the time he retired 77 years later, the craft was considered an art form rather than a practical profession.
