Days of Heaven (1978) is a true classic of American film. (Metacritic’s average of all the critics’ reviews, on a scale of 1 to 100, is 93, a number less than 1% achieve.) Set on a large Texas farm around 1900, the film was by far the most popular and accessible work of the excellent, but often rather cerebral, director Terence Malick, a philosophy major at Harvard in the Sixties. Days’ popularity can be traced to its stunning visual beauty; a compellingly passionate love story, in which young Richard Gere battles with Sam Shepherd for the love of Brooke Adams, Shepherd’s wife; its excellent cast; and its raw emotional power. If you saw it forty years ago, you’ll know it’s worth seeing again. If you never saw it at all, you’ll not forget it if you see it now.
