"April's film will be The Makioka Sisters, a Japanese masterpiece by Kon Ichikawa which opens, appropriately enough for our spring, with four beautiful Japanese women in gorgeous kimonos walking through a garden of cherry blossoms. These women are sisters in the wealthy Makioka merchant family from Japan's Chicago, Osaka. Based on a great novel by one of Japan's finest writers, Jun'ichiro Tanizaki, The Makioka Sisters tells the story of the intertwined lives of these four sisters through the crucial, disastrous decade leading to and entering World War II. The decline of the family's once great business fortunes parallels that of Imperial Japan itself. One of the most beautiful of all Japanese movies, quite moving and very relatable because the love and tensions between the sisters, however tied to Japanese tradition, are also universal."
