We are looking forward to taking your group on the "Behind the Scenes Tour" at the South Carolina Aquarium.  We will see things that most visitors to the Aquarium will never see, and get an inside look at the care and feeding of the animals, and get an idea of what it takes to really run a large public Aquarium.

We will start by taking the staff/freight elevator up to the 3rd floor, a non-guest area. We will take a peek at the kitchen where staff and volunteers prepare food 365 days a year for about 5,000 animals, and learn a little about the variety of foods in their diet!!

If the door is open, we might also get to peek into the water quality lab where biologists constantly monitor and maintain the water conditions through regular sample collection, chemical/biological testing, data analysis, and equipment upkeep. Then we will proceed into one of our many large behind-the-scenes rooms that houses holding tanks, quarantine tanks, and most importantly the top of the "Great Ocean Tank," where we will concentrate our tour.

We will learn a little about the filtration systems, about the scuba diver program, and of course a lot about the fish and a reptile who inhabit this 385,000 gallon tank, and possibly watch the animals get fed. Sometimes, a diver will come over and talk to us and answer questions (not always), which is a special treat.

Most people don't realize how much it takes to run an Aquarium 24/7, and the Behind the Scenes Tour will give you a small sampling, a little bit of an idea, of what it takes to keep all these animals safe, healthy and thriving.
