13TH

Even though this documentary was released in 2016, it seems especially relevant at this moment. 13TH, has won many awards, including 4 Emmys. Watch the film individually on Netflix and then we will discuss on our Zoom Call on July 14th. Please register by 2pm of event day.

The website notes: In this thought-provoking documentary, scholars, activists and politicians analyze the criminalization of African Americans and the U.S. prison boom.

Here are some reviews:
Ms. DuVernay makes a startling and powerful statement about the prison industrial complex and the history of black lives in post-Jim-Crow America.
-Manohla Dargis, The NYTimes

When you watch "13TH," you feel that you're seeing an essential dimensionof America with new vision. That's what a cathartically clear-eyed work of documentary art can do.
-Owen Gleiberman, Variety
