On the coast between McCellanville and Georgetown, lies the Santee Delta. Encompassing about 550,000 acres, it is larger than the better-known ACE Basin, yet one of the least trodden and most vulnerable places on earth.
Please join your IAH neighbors for Our Secret Delta, an epic story about power, beauty and how one of South Carolina’s last forgotten places faces new threats.
Our guide to this adventure will be Dr. Richard Porcher, Mt. Pleasant neighbor and acclaimed author of many books on Low Country history and botany. Dr. Porcher was raised in Pinopolis, was a professor of biological science at Clemson, and Professor Emeritus at The Citadel. His many honors include Charleston Horticultural Society’s 1830 award (’06), South Carolina Environmental Awareness Award (’08), Citadel School of Sciences & Mathematics Award (’15) and Order of The Palmetto (’19). We truly blessed to have Dr. Porcher share with us the fascinating research he is conducting on the Santee Delta, a place of historical treasures, forgotten lives, nexus of the rice culture. He is conducting this research in preparation of a book that will provide clues to events that shaped the trajectory of the South.
